Climate Justice: Articles & Tracker

Climate Action Groups: International

  • 350.org  Bill McKibben and friends established 350.org to bring attention to the number 350. McKibben writes, “The most recent science tells us that unless we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth.” Here is a “must read” Rolling Stone article, “Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math,” by Bill McKibben.
  • Citizen’s Climate Lobby  “Citizens Climate Lobby proposes that a tax be placed on fossil fuels, based on the CO2 content of those fuels, at the point of sale. Revenue from that tax should be returned to the public as a monthly or annual payment to protect households from the rising costs associated with the carbon tax.
  • Climate Reality Project  “In 2006, Nobel Laureate and former US Vice President Al Gore got the world talking about climate change with the Academy Award-winning film An Inconvenient Truth. It was just the beginning of a a climate revolution. Later that year he founded what would become The Climate Reality Project to move the conversation forward and turn awareness into action all across the Earth.
  • Extinction Rebellion At the core of Extinction Rebellion’s philosophy is nonviolent civil disobedience. We promote civil disobedience and rebellion because we think it is necessary….Our duty is to create a world fit for the next seven generations to live in.
  • Fridays for Future #FridaysForFuture is a movement that began in August 2018, after 15 years old Greta Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament every schoolday for three weeks, to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis.

  • Ecology Center In addition to its recycling program, store, and resource center/library, the Ecology Center has a Climate Change Project and hosts free Climate Change Action Workshops and trainings. I attended one of these workshops and it was a heartening experience to meet with others in the community over a series of four nights, supporting each other in our small efforts to lower our footprints while also looking how to influence our communities and climate policy. Also, check out the Ecology Center’s Calendar for climate related events in the Bay Area.

Often this all takes place far from the eyes of concerned citizens or consumers of the end-products.
